McDonald’s deletes anti-Trump tweet, claiming Twitter account had been hacked
Friday, March 17th, 2017 4:13:23 by fatimaarshadMcDonald’s came under fire by Trump supporters after an anti-Trump tweet was posted from the restaurant’s Twitter handle.
According to details, the following tweet was posted from the fast-food chain’s Twitter account; “@realdonaldtrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a President and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tiny hands.”
Even though the tweet was quickly deleted after being posted on Thursday, the users were quick to copy and spread the controversial tweet. The tweet came a day after Twitter accounts of a number of major news organizations, chief executives, government agencies and other high-profile users were hacked.
“Based on our investigation, we have determined that our Twitter account was hacked by an external source. We took swift action to secure it, and we apologise this tweet was sent through our corporate McDonald’s account,” McDonald’s spokeswoman Terri Hickey said in a statement.
President Trump did not respond to the tweet even though he is an avid Twitter user. However, his supporters were quick to react to the tweet, calling for a boycott of the famous chain.
“Hey @McDonaldsCorp YOU can’t just undo a tweet!!!
Since you don’t support America, Americans will not support YOU!!! #BoycottMcDonalds,” wrote Deborah Brewer? (@Debbie92083).
Meanwhile analysts argue that the tweet will not cost the McDonald’s in the long term since the company apologized for it and deleted the tweet. Moreover, most twitter trends die within 10-12 hours and users move on to something else.
