SC orders Tayyaba to be transferred to SOS Village
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017 5:19:36 by fatimaarshadThe Supreme Court on Tuesday, ordered for the transfer of 10-year-old child maid Tayyaba, to be transferred to SOS Village from Pakistan Sweet Homes, which is an orphanage. The SC took this decision by exercising parental jurisdiction and also stated that the girl will stay in SOS for two months, after which it will be evaluated whether to let her stay there or send her back to her parents.
Tayyaba’s case made headlines a few months back as she was severely tortured in the hands of her owners. She had been working as a maid in the home of additional district and sessions judge Raja Khurram Ali in Islamabad for the past few years.
On Dec 28, 2016, someone from the judge’s neighborhood contacted the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau’s Rawalpindi office, about the torture being carried out on the child maid. Initially when the police questioned Tayyaba, she said that she had fallen from the stairs. However, later a medical examination and Tayyaba’s own statement confirmed that she had been tortured by her owners.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar took suo moto notice of this case and directed the authorities to conduct investigation. Later, the judge and his wife were found guilty of torturing Tayyaba.
Since Tayyaba’s mother and father also failed as parents, the SC took control of the matter and ordered her to be sent to Sweet Homes and later if need be, to foster care.
The SC order stated: “Without undermining the status of Sweet Home, we direct the concerned authorities to move Tayyaba from Sweet Home to SOS Children Village Islamabad with effect from Monday.”
