Rajanpur rape case: Key suspect arrested through DNA evidence

A 13-year-old girl was raped and got pregnant in Rajanpur by a 40-year-old man. Instead of terminating the pregnancy, the girl’s father decided to keep the baby so that when time comes, the real culprit can be put behind bars.

The victim gave birth to a child in November and after four months, DNA sample was taken from the baby to ascertain who her father is. With the help of the DNA sample obtained, 40-year-old Kashif was found out to be the rapist and he was arrested along with his brother Arshad on Wednesday.

Both the culprits were taken to Lahore from Rajanpur so that the DNA test could be conducted there.

According to the details of the incident provided, the 13-year-old girl dropped out of school due to poverty and had to start working as domestic help in the neighborhood. Since she was keen on studying, one of the neighbors offered to teach her how to read the Quran. It was in the same house that she was raped in February last year.

Instead of bowing down to the backward traditions, the father of the victim filed a report with the police and decided to keep the child so that DNA sample could be taken from the baby when time comes.

Changes in the rape law which were made last year, make DNA test for victims mandatory and the police is also penalized for delaying investigation. Victims are also allowed to testify in court through in-camera session.

The case has made headlines as Rajanpur is a backward area in southwest Punjab, and the decision by the father to keep the child, helped in bringing the culprit to justice.
