The horrendous tradition of Vani still continues to have a stronghold in the rural cities of Pakistan as another such incident has been reported in Sadiqabad, Rahim Yar Khan.

According to the details of the incident provided, a Jirga decided to marry off an eight-year-old girl to a 28-year-old man because the girl’s uncle married of his own choice and eloped with the girl.

The decision was taken in order to punish the girl’s uncle who married out of love. After much deliberation among the elders of the village, the Jirga decided to compensate for the man’s ‘crime’ by declaring the practice of vani for the girl. The punishment did not end there as the girl’s father was also ordered to pay a sum of Rs. 800,000.

The man with whom the little girl is supposed to get married, is the brother of the woman who married the girl’s uncle and eloped with him.

While the groom’s family is pushing for the marriage, the girl’s family is pushing for help as they don’t want their child to be traded as a result of this cruel tradition. “We do not want to give away our daughter [to him],” the aggrieved mother told Geo News.

The little girl herself could be seen crying and she told the reporters that she does not want to get married and instead wants to study. The father also lamented that he could not afford to give such a huge amount of money.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and has ordered the district police officer to send him a report on the case.
