Faisalabad University suspends teacher for sexually harassing student
Tuesday, April 18th, 2017 3:31:36 by fatimaarshadThe management of Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) took strict and prompt action against one of its lecturers for sexually harassing an MPhil student.
According to the details provided, the management of GCUF suspended an assistant professor for three months after an inquiry committee found him guilty of sexually harassing a female MPhil Organic Chemistry student.
“Consequent upon the recommendation of the Sexual Harassment Committee, the vice chancellor… has been pleased to place Dr Nasir Rasool… under suspension, for a period of 90 days, with immediate effect,” said the notification issued by GCUF registrar dated April 17.
The assistant professor against whom the allegations were made has been identified as Dr. Nasir Rasool, who is employed in the chemistry department of the university. According to sources, a probe against him was started after the vice chancellor referred the matter to the university’s Sexual Harassment Committee after a complaint filed by S*, a research student of organic chemistry on March 27.
The committee was instructed to thoroughly investigate the matter and submit a report to the management by April 7.
In the complaint filed by S, she had written that she had been assigned to do her research work with Dr. Rasool and at times was required to work alone with him in the lab. It was during these times that he would make advances towards her.
Dr Rasool “has been constantly behaving obnoxiously, flirtatiously and unethically with me,” the student said, adding that this was against her “dignity and honour”.
S said the professor had been constantly making “unethical phone calls”, sending indecent text messages and “threatens of dire consequences to discourage me from complaining against him”.
“I can’t bear it anymore… his vulgar communication is unbearable for me.”
The student urged the management to take strict action against the concerned teacher and “protect my dignity and honour like you would as you would do for your own daughter”.
Printed screenshots of the indecent texts sent to S were also submitted as a proof.
The university’s registrar office said in the suspension notice that a case for the initiation of inquiry against Dr Rasool under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006 will be placed before the forthcoming meeting of the university syndicate.
