Mashal Khan’s teacher apologizes to nation for failing to save him
Tuesday, April 18th, 2017 3:22:42 by fatimaarshadA lecturer at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, and Mashal Khan’s teacher, Ziaullah Hamdard, apologized to the nation and to the slain student’s parents for having failed him. Talking to a reporter on a local television show, Hamdard expressed his regret and grief over being unable to save Khan from the violent mob that attacked and killed him.
“He [Mashal] was not even given the chance to prove his innocence,” he lamented. “They [mob] were in front of me yet I was not able to do anything. I haven’t been able to sleep since the past four days,” Ziaullah said during Geo News’ show Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath on Monday.
“Mashal was a humanist, he was into socialism and Sufism. He would often discuss Sufism with me,” remarked the teacher. “I never saw Mashal without a book in his hand.” He was well-versed in different languages and striking a conversation with him always proved to be fruitful. Ziaullah also said Mashal was his student, friend and son.
“Mashal was a ‘diya’ [lamp]. If all the lamps are put out then the nation will continue to live in darkness,” he said. “Mashal’s killing was politically motivated.”
Hamdard then announced that he has resigned from the university which allowed such an atrocity to take place. The lecturer also alleged that the university administration played a huge role in the escalation of this situation.
According to different sources, the university administration itself had released an instruction to students to look into blasphemy charges against Mashal Khan and two other students. However, this claim has been denied by the officials at the university.
Mashal was a vocal critic of the university’s administration and had on several occasions, talked against the corrupt practices taking place there.
Investigations are now taking place into the case and strict action is called for against the perpetrators.
