Chitral: Muslim cleric saves man accused for blasphemy from angry mob
Wednesday, April 26th, 2017 4:08:26 by fatimaarshadWhere one sees an extreme case of violence and hatred exhibited by Muslims in Mashal Khan’s murder case, it gets hard to believe that patient and just people are still present in this society. A Muslim cleric from Chitral set the right example by handing over a man accused of blasphemy to the police instead of an angry mob attacking him.
The incident took place two weeks ago in a mosque in Chitral, where a man allegedly committed blasphemy during the Friday sermon. The Imam of the mosque, Maulana Khaliqul Zama, quickly became concerned and he called up the police before the angry mob could take the suspect in their hands.
An angry mob of worshippers beat up AR (real identity being kept confidential) on April 21, after he allegedly made some blasphemous remarks during the sermon. Fearing that the angry crowd might actually lynch AR to death, Zaman quickly called up the police and handed him over to them.
“I didn’t do it for any award, this is what Islam teaches us,” said Zaman in an exclusive interview with a local newspaper over the phone. “Islam doesn’t allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.”
The people of Chitral are peaceful and have no wish to disturb law and order, said Zaman. “It was only a few people who became very provoked,” he added.
People have been singing praises of the Imam on social media and especially Twitter.
According to reports, AR is believed to be mentally ill and if that is true, then his crime can be forgiven. The accused was produced before a judicial magistrate on April 22 where he rejected all the allegations levelled against him. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) then ordered the formation of a medical board to examine his mental condition and submit a report within two days.
