Muslim convert injures two French policemen

A suspect Muslim convert shot and wounded two French policemen on the French-Indian Ocean island of Reunion as reported by the media.

According to the details of the incident provided, the police were trying to arrest the suspect when he shot and wounded two officers on Thursday. The attack comes just a week after another religious extremist killed one French policeman and injured two others on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris.

The French police reported that the police had gotten information regarding the suspect living on the Reunion Island and were trying to arrest him. “The man refused to be arrested and fired a rifle at police,” a government official said, adding that the suspect — in his 20s, who is believed to be a recent convert to Islam — was now in custody.

The two officers who were injured were immediately taken to the hospital and their lives are now out of danger. The anti-terrorist department of the Paris prosecutors’ office is investigating the attack.

The suspect used to live with his mother in an apartment in Saint-Benoit, which is located on the Island’s east end. The suspect’s mother has also been taken into custody. Police reported that they also seized a number of weapons and other material that could be used to make Molotov cocktails.

When the neighbors were inquired about the suspect’s personality and life, most of them said that they knew little about him.

The suspect “is a very discreet man who didn´t seem to have a lot of friends and was never a problem,” a neighbor said.

“We did notice that he had been sporting a beard lately but we didn´t pay much attention to it,” added a young man.

So far more than 230 people have been killed in a recent episode of attacks by radicals in France since January 2015. The country has been in a state of emergency for more than a year and a half.
