Person who shot Mashal Khan arrested

Police revealed on Thursday that the shooter who killed Mashal Khan has been arrested. Khan was a journalism student at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) who had been lynched by an angry mob over blasphemy allegations and ultimately a student shot him to death.

A news conference was held by DIG Mardan Alam Khan Shinwari, who revealed that he shooter who killed Khan has been identified as a person known as Imran.

The police were able to catch Imran based on the information received from confessions of others accused in the case.

“Two confessional statements mentioned the name of the person who shot at Mashal. The person identified as Imran was a class fellow of Mashal in the journalism department,” said Shinwari.

The DIG also told the press that Imran has confessed to his crime in front of a magistrate.

Shinwari said that Khan was shot at two times and that investigations based on CCTV footage and other evidence is underway. “Some things we will share with media later,” said DIG Mardan.

The use of technology has helped in catching the suspect in this murder case. Shinwari also said that all the investigation has been evidence-based and there is no room left for any doubt.

Shortly after Khan’s murder, a video had surfaced showing a group of men rejoicing over Khan’s death and vowing to keep the identity of the shooter a secret.

Shinwari also explained that on the day of the lynching, police reached the scene in 13 minutes and were able to save the lives of two people, including a professor.

So far 36 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching case, out of which nine are employees of AWKUM.
