Ten suspects refuse to accept charges in Mashal Khan lynching case
Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 10:13:04 by fatimaarshadMashal Khan lynching case continues and so far, 47 accused in the case have been arrested. However, it was reported on Tuesday, that as many as ten suspects have refused to accept charges which have been levied against them in the case.
The accused who have refused the charges include two staffers and eight students of Abdul Wali Khan University, who were brought in court after their remand was completed. The defendants rejected the charges before a magistrate, however, they were ordered back to jail on judicial remand till May 16.
It has been reported that out of the 49 people accused in the lynching case, two are still at large. The absconders include a councilor and according to a report, they have escaped to the tribal areas. Three separate teams of the police have been formed in order to capture the escaped suspects.
The prime suspect in the case, Imran, confessed to having shot Mashal Khan before a city magistrate. In his statement, Imran said that he opened fire at Mashal because he was guilty of blasphemy and that he does not regret the killing at all.
Imran was Mashal’s class fellow who fired three shots at him, out of which two hit the deceased. Initially Imran was being protected by his fellows but he was eventually caught by the police. The weapon used in the murder was also retrieved.
Imran was presented in an anti-terrorism court on Friday and remanded in police custody for four days.
Two separate cases have been registered and police have arrested eight suspects in connection with the killing of Mashal Khan.
Mardan District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed said on Friday the cases were registered under clauses 427, 297, 302 and 148 of the Pakistan Penal Code and section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Mashal Khan was a journalism student at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan and he was lynched and killed by an angry mob who accused him of blasphemy.
