Head of Daesh in Afghanistan killed by US, Afghan forces
Monday, May 8th, 2017 11:23:31 by fatimaarshadIn a joint operation conducted by the US and Afghan forces, the head of Daesh in Afghanistan, was reportedly killed. The joint operation took place on April 27 in the eastern province of Nangarhar, which is said to be a strong-hold of Daesh in Afghanistan.
The Daesh chapter of Afghanistan is called Daesh-Khorasan or Daesh-K and it was headed by Abdul Hasib, who was killed during the operation. Hasib was appointed the head last year after his predecessor Hafiz Saeed died in a US drone strike. Since taking over as the head of Daesh-K, Hasib had ordered a series of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan including one on March 8, in one of the main military hospitals in Kabul.
Last month the Pentagon has reported that Hasib was probably killed in an attack by the forces, however, the news had not been confirmed until this Sunday. During the raid, two US army Rangers were also killed.
“This successful joint operation is another important step in our relentless campaign to defeat Daesh-K in 2017,” the top US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson said in a statement from US military headquarters in Kabul.
The attack on the military hospital in Kabul by Daesh was one of the most brutal ones in which the militants beheaded the elders in the hospital in front of their families and kidnapped girls and women to force them to marry Daesh fighters. Several doctors and medical staff were also killed in the attack.
Daesh-K maintains links with the main Daesh movement in Iraq and Syria but it has a lot of operational independence. Since March, an offensive was launched against the terrorist group in which the US and Afghan special forces used drone strikes and other air support to target their hideouts.
