Unexploded WWII bombs force 50,000 people from their homes in Germany
Monday, May 8th, 2017 11:37:59 by fatimaarshadOn Sunday, the German police evacuated 50,000 people from their homes in the northern city of Hanover in one of the country’s largest post-war operations in order to defuse World War II era bombs.
There are still a number of bombs buried under the German soil and operation to uncover and diffuse them, keep taking place from time to time in different parts of Germany.
According to the details provided, the residents of a densely populated part of Hanover were ordered to leave their homes on Sunday for the operation. The operation was being planned since April as several unexploded bombs were discovered in the area. Initially it was thought that five unexploded bombs were buried but it later became apparent that there were fewer than that.
By mid-afternoon, experts had extracted three British bombs and diffused two out of those. The third one required special equipment to be diffused safely, hence it was taken away.
Since the operation usually lasts all day, special arrangements were made by the government to look after the displaced residents.
Local authorities arranged sports, cultural and leisure activities, including museum visits and film screenings for residents affected by the evacuation.
Museums opened their doors for free, while cinemas offered special screenings at discounted prices.
Those who needed rest could head to three sites where almost 1,000 beds were available, as well as 10,000 portions of goulash, reported a local newspaper.
Voluntary church groups also joined hands to look after the residents and distribute food amongst them.
Due to the operation, seven retirement and nursing homes had been affected while some rail traffic through the city was also disrupted.
More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs are regularly found buried on German land.
