Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 2:12:44 by fatimaarshadA traffic police constable belonging to Mardan shot dead a person who was ‘mentally unstable’, near city police station on Tuesday.
According to the reports, the constable, who was identified as Saeed, fired at the man because he thought him to be suspicious and also acted in self-defense.
The deceased, identified as Bilal, apparently came running towards the police station and pushed Saeed to the ground, who was standing in his way. The constable deemed the man to be suspicious and opened fire at him, killing him on the spot.
Saeed clarified that since Bilal supported long hair and a beard, he even appeared more suspicious lending the constable to believe that he was a terrorist.
According to the DSP Aitzaz Khan, the constable has been arrested and a case has been registered against him. Further investigations into the case are also underway to look at the case from all angles.
According to Bilal’s family, the deceased was 20-years-old and he was suffering from some mental illness. On the day of the incident, Bilal was being taken to the hospital by his father, but he did not want to go. Eventually, he broke free from his father’s grip and started running away.
A similar incident took place in Mardan a few months ago, when a cloth vendor was shot dead by the police. Even at that time the police claimed that the vendor, identified as Olas, appeared to be terrorist. Olas had defied orders when he did not stop his bicycle after crossing over to a red-zone. When the police called out to Olas to stop, he did not and eventually the officers shot him to death.
However, it was later confirmed that Olas was innocent and had no criminal record against him.
