Power outages in Peshawar lead to violent protests

According to the latest reports, people from across Khyber Pakhtunknwa province took to the streets in different parts of the province, in order to protest over the long load shedding hours.
Situation in Malakand Agency’s Dargai area was the worst, where protestors first ransacked a WAPDA office and later directed their anger towards the law enforcement agencies, who had been called to control the situation. Due to the ensuing clashes, a person was killed while several others were also injured.
According to the details of the incident provided, angry protestors attacked the WAPDA office early on Monday morning, setting fire to the computers and furniture inside the office. The protestors also burnt records which were stored in the office of the XEN (executive engineers) and SDOs (sub-divisional officers) and also broke windows of the officials’ cars.
The protestors then blocked the main Mardan road, due to which traffic was disrupted for several hours.
As a result, officers from the law enforcement agencies had to come to control the situation. The officers resorted to aerial firing to disperse the crowds due to which one person was killed and several others were injured. An assistant commissioner of the police was also injured during the tussle.
Till the time of filing of this report, law enforcers were still trying to get the situation under control.
