The case of child maid Tayaba made headlines in December 2016, when she was rescued from the house of an Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Raja Khurram Ai, whose family had been torturing the little girl.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court (SC), hearing the Tayaba torture case, ordered that the former child maid should continue to reside at the SOS Children’s Village in Islamabad, till the time further judgment is delivered.

The reason the 10-year-old maid is staying at the SOS village and not her parents is because they put her in harm’s way by making her work in an abusive household. Tayaba’s father also forgave the ADSJ and his wife for severely torturing his daughter. At one point, several families had come forward claiming that Tayaba was their daughter.

According to reports, the little girl has been staying at the SOS village since March, and she is being well taken care of. Initially, the court had given Tayaba’s custody to the SOS village for two months. However, after the completion of this time period and after seeing her condition, the SC has further increased her stay at the facility.

Tayaba’s case offers a unique opportunity to push for legislative reforms on issues surrounding child labor. In Pakistan, this child labor is abused because there are no laws surrounding it and employers get away with forcefully making children work and abusing their rights.

Due to poverty and unemployment, several poor families also give away their children as labor in exchange for their wages.
