Powerful explosion rocks Kabul killing 90 people, injuring over 350
Thursday, June 1st, 2017 2:06:48 by fatimaarshadA massive explosion hit the Afghan capital city early on Wednesday morning, when a huge truck bomb ripped through Kabul’s diplomatic quarter. The explosion was so huge that it completely disrupted the morning traffic and brought everything to a standstill.
After the blast, bodies of victims could be seen strewn across the entire road and towering plume of smoke rose from the area. The explosion took place at a sensitive area which houses foreign embassies and houses of diplomats. After the blast, smoke could be seen blowing out of the windows of several missions and residences hundreds of meters away from the blast site.
Immediately after the blast, dozens of cars choked the surrounding roads as wounded survivors and panicked people tried to search for their loved ones. Ambulances and rescue workers also rushed to the scene and even an hour after the blast, ambulances were seen taking the wounded to the hospital.
Authorities warned the toll could yet rise. “They are still bringing bodies and wounded people to hospitals,” senior health ministry spokesperson Ismael Kawoosi told AFP. The interior ministry was calling on Kabul residents to donate blood, saying hospitals were in “dire need”.
Due to the blast buildings of several embassies including the Pakistani and Indian embassy were also damaged.
So far none of the militant groups have claimed responsibility for the attack, but in the recent past the Islamic State has been carrying out several attacks across Afghanistan. The real target of the blast was also not immediately clear.
