Manila casino rampage leaves 34 people dead
Friday, June 2nd, 2017 12:59:44 by fatimaarshadAt least 34 people were killed and several others injured after a gunman burst into a Manila casino and opened fire in the air and set game tables alight. The deadly rampage began late on Thursday night, and the rescue workers kept working into the early hours of Friday morning to get the situation under control.
According to police sources, the incident is being termed as a botched robbery attempt and the gunman was said to be acting alone. The suspect killed himself and his body was also discovered from the hotel.
The incident took place at Resorts World Manila entertainment complex which is owned by Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. After the incident, the group’s shares fell up to seven percent.
According to the details provided, the gunman parked his car on the second floor parking and just barged into the casino. He did not fire at people in particular and headed for the casino chips which were stored in a room. However, during his attempt, he set several tables alight, due to which a fire started.
People started panicking and many of them were killed due to suffocation from smoke, as they tried to flee the complex.
Resort owner said authorities were still seeking details. “We have been informed of several casualties, the number and identities of whom have yet to be determined,” it said in a statement.
The body of the gunman was also found in the hotel room.
“He burned himself inside the hotel room 510,” national police chief Ronald dela Rosa told a media conference. “He lay down on the bed, covered himself in a thick blanket and apparently doused himself in gasoline.”
The incident is being termed as a tragedy but all forms of terrorism have been ruled out.
