Stinky Karachi: Where is all that smell coming from?
Friday, June 2nd, 2017 1:29:25 by fatimaarshadAnother worry has been added to the citizens of Karachi who were already enduring the scorching heat, no electricity and long fasting hours. A strange and very foul smell has engulfed the entire city and no one can tell what is causing this smell and where it is coming from.
Even the Pakistan Meteorological Department and the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency are baffled as they have no clue what is causing the strange smell which has engulfed various parts of the metropolis.
Citizens from DHA, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Mehmoodabad and PAF Falcon have been particularly affected by the smell.
Different people have come up with different theories to explain the phenomenon but the most widely accepted one is by environmentalists who cite decomposition of waste due to extremely hot climate as one of the reasons. In addition to that, the direction of the wind has also changed, which is bringing the disgusting odor to the city.
Talking to a local newspaper, senior environmentalist Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal Shams said, “The high-level of humidity arising from warm temperatures in the city has decomposed organic waste, which is creating the smell. What we have understood so far is that in the process of decomposition of organic waste, which includes all types of food items, animal bodies or waste, gases like hydrogen sulphide mix in the atmosphere to create a very foul odor.”
Shams added that the change in the direction of the wind has helped in carrying the smell to the city. Rehri Goth bay, is an illegal dumping ground which lays in the east of the city and that is where winds are coming from these days.
Shams added that the government needs to do something about illegal dumping and climate change soon, as these problems will increase in the future.
