Court rejects Dr. Asim’s plea to remove his name from ECL
Monday, June 5th, 2017 10:36:54 by fatimaarshadIt appears that Dr. Asim will have to get his surgery done from Pakistan, instead of some foreign country as the Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his plea for the removal of his name from Exit Control List (ECL).
The SHC on Monday came up with the decision under a two member bench headed by Justice Junaid Ghaffar. On May 26, the same bench had reserved its verdict in the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) leader’s plea to remove his name from ECL.
Dr. Asim’s lawyers had requested to the SHC to remove his name from ECL so that he could go abroad for his surgery which the doctors had recommended. The federal government had opposed this request and informed the bench that the accused has been put on ECL on the order of the court as well as on the recommendations of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Dr. Asim faces charges related to corruption and terrorism. He is currently out on bail but the hearings continue in his case.
Dr. Asim was a former federal minister and close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari. He faces trial in two cases of alleged corruption worth more than Rs. 450 billion and another of allegedly facilitating and treating terrorists at this medical facility-Dr Ziauddin Hospital.
Dr. Asim was released from the jail at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical center in Karachi on March 31, after obtaining bail in the cases against him. He was arrested by the Rangers in August 2015 and later transferred into the police custody.
