Top secret US report on Russian hacking leaked online

Another embarrassing leak of a top secret US document detailing how Russia had meddled in last year’s election has caused National Security Agency (NSA) its reputation yet again.

The US authorities arrested a 25-year-old woman by the name of Reality Leigh Winner, who worked for an NSA subcontractor, soon after the report was leaked as she is being blamed for it.

The report was published on an online news website called The Intercept and it talks about how hackers from Russian military tried repeatedly to break into US voting systems before last year’s presidential elections. The leak raises new concerns on the extent of Russian involvement in US elections which led to Republican candidate Donald Trump beating Hillary Clinton to become the President of the United States.

This report is just one in a series of leaks which have been taking place in the recent past causing a lot of embarrassment to US intelligence agencies. The NSA employs thousands of private contractors for its work and Winner was one of those contractors who released the report.

Soon after the report was published on The Intercept, the Trump administration announced the arrest of intelligence contractor Reality Leigh Winner, 25, on charges of violating the espionage act.

“Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation,” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement.

It is not mentioned what will become of Winner, but she will be dealt with strictly.
