Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 11:19:30 by fatimaarshadUber Technologies Inc. appears to be taking a step in the right direction by fixing its practices and penalizing those who have misconducted themselves. It was reported on Tuesday that the company fired 20 employees and was improving management training after an investigation by a law firm into sexual harassment claims and other allegations at the company.
The ride-hailing company hired the law firm Perkins Coie to look into claims of harassment, discrimination, bullying and other employee concerns. After the report was presented to the company’s management, 20 staff members were sent packing.
It has been learnt that the law firm has working along the former US Attorney General Eric Holder into a broader investigation which covers the company’s culture and practices. The company has come under fire time and again for different allegations ranging from sexual harassment, discrimination and bullying.
Staff complaints dating back as far as 2012 were investigated and action was taken against 58 cases and no action on 100 more. Of the 215 claims, Uber said 54 were related to discrimination, 47 related to sexual harassment, 45 to unprofessional behaviour, 33 to bullying and 36 to other types of claims.
The bulk of the complaints came from Uber’s San Francisco headquarters.
It was revealed by the company that it has hired Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei to train all managers, reporting to Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick. The company also revealed plans to expand its employee relations unit to better investigate claims and improve the management training program at the company, since most of the Uber managers were first-time bosses.
These steps are expected to set the company on the right path.
