Thursday, June 15th, 2017 2:21:45 by fatimaarshadAn unprecedented fire engulfed a 24-storey high housing tower in central London on Wednesday, claiming they lives of 12 people and leaving hundreds of them homeless.
The fire erupted at 1 am on Wednesday as most of the residents were sleeping. So far the cause of the inferno is still under investigation but it is clear that the fire system of the building was not working.
Smoke plumes could be seen from miles as fire brigade tried to douse the flames which took hours to completely put-out. More than 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines were engaged in putting out the fire.
It has been reported that the Grenfell Tower apartment building housed more than 600 people. Residents of the building had raised concerns about the building’s safety in the past but it appears that their concerns were not addressed.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan assessed the damage from the fire and said that there were questions to be answered and that the responsible people will be brought to justice.
Residents could be heard screaming for help as the fire leapt up the building. Some people were seen throwing their infants from their windows so that they could be saved. Others tried to escape the fire by tying up sheets and trying to climb down from their buildings.
The firefighters were able to save a number of people early on, but those who were trapped on the higher levels were harder to rescue.
People from the building have been left homeless but they were taken to a shelter which was set up near the building. Phone lines were also set up for relatives who might be concerned about their loved ones residing in that building.
