Indian spy’s execution put on hold till culmination of ICJ hearing
Thursday, June 22nd, 2017 12:12:49 by fatimaarshadIt has been learnt that the death sentence awarded to Indian spy caught working in Pakistan, Kulbushan Jadhav’s execution has been put on hold till the time the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) hearing is concluded.
Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, talked to reporters and indicated a softening stance towards the RAW agent, saying that there is ‘room to rethink’ in the issue. He further confirmed that Pakistan will not carry out his death sentence until the hearing in the ICJ is over.
“We would like this process to be over quickly, but until [it does], we are committed,” he told The Hindu in an interview about India-Pakistan relations during his tenure which is due to end next month.
Jadhav was caught acting against the interests of Pakistan in Balochistan last year and then in April, he was awarded the death sentence by a military court. After the decision to execute him was released, India has been trying with all its might to revert this and save one of its citizens. India appeared to the ICJ to halt this execution and the case is still underway.
Basit further added that if the ICJ’s decision is against Jadhav, he would still be able to appeal for clemency first to army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa and later to President Mamnoon Hussain.
“There is a process that is ongoing, and if Jadhav’s appeal were rejected [by the court], that would be the time for the army chief or the president to reconsider the sentence against him.
“He has been tried, he has been convicted, and he has the right to appeal. If that is rejected, then he has the right to submit an application for clemency to the army chief, and if he denies it, then to the president,” he said. “So there is room for a rethink there,” Basit added.
