Turkish man slaps woman for wearing shorts during Ramazan
Thursday, June 22nd, 2017 4:12:33 by fatimaarshadA Turkish man took matters of teaching Islam to a woman in his own hands when he assaulted her for wearing revealing clothes during the holy month of Ramazan.
A video footage of the incident is making rounds on social media, in which a man can be seen slapping a woman on her face and later making his way out of the bus. As the woman ran after to grab him, he threw her at the back of the bus and ran away.
The victim in this case is a university student by the name of Asena Melisa Saglam, who was travelling on the bus in Istanbul on June 14, when the man who was seated behind her, struck her face.
Saglam told reporters that throughout the journey, the man had been verbally harassing her by saying that she should not be wearing shorts during Ramazan. However, Saglam did not pay any heed to him and put headphones in her ears.
However, she was appalled when he hit her and even though she tried her best to chase him down, he got away. The man was detained shortly afterwards for questioning but he was released later after he justified his action by saying that he had been ‘provoked’.
“The release of the attacker is a threat to all women,” the women’s rights organisation We Will Stop Femicide Platform wrote on Twitter. “We will wear whatever we want outside. We will not give up our freedoms.”
In response to the outcry, an order was given to re-arrest the culprit. It was later found out that he had been held in jail since Sunday on separate accusations of committing a tax crime and is also wanted for drugs offences.
