Search commences in Nanga Parbat for two missing mountaineers
Thursday, June 29th, 2017 10:46:53 by fatimaarshadSearch parties have been deployed to look for two missing mountaineers who set out on an expedition to scale the world’s ninth highest peak. On Wednesday, Pakistani rescuers embarked on a mission to rescue a Spanish man and an Argentinian who went missing on a dangerous Himalayan peak known as ‘Killer Mountain’.
A ground team began searching for Alberto Zerain Berasatei from Spain and Mariano Galacan from Argentina. Due to the poor weather, helicopters could not join the search effort, said Karrar Haidri who is a spokesman for the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
The two missing mountaineers were part of a 13—member expedition that set out last month to climb the 8,126 meter high Nanga Parbat. The last time anyone heard from the two mountaineers was on Saturday and after that, there has been radio silence.
The rest of their party had returned to base camp, Haidri confirmed.
“In such weather conditions and without adequate food supply, survival appears unlikely but there was the case of Tomaz Humar a few years ago,” Haidari said, adding that rescue officials are doing everything possible to find the men.
In 2005, Slovenian mountaineer Humur was trapped on Nanga Parbat for six days. Initially everyone thought he was dead but search for his body continued. Eventually, army helicopters found him trapped under a ledge at a height of nearly 6000 meters.
Pakistan has a number of peaks over 7,000 meters and also is home to the world´s second-highest mountain, K2, as well as three others which are among the world´s 14 summits higher than 8,000 meters. These peaks attract mountaineers from all over the world.
