Muslim Man in India Caught Wearing Burqa on a Train

Tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities have dated back centuries and still exist today. This conflict is most apparent in India, where the two religions live side by side, albeit not always in harmony.

In a recent incident that took place on Sunday, a Muslim man was found on a train in Aligarh, clad in a burqa. Police arrested the engineer and questioned him as to why he was dressed in women’s clothing.

Nazmul Hussain replied that he was scared of being lynched for being Muslim. He revealed that he had been threatened by a man when he was on his way to Delhi to visit a sick relative.

Having read about the murder of 15 year old Junaid Khan last month on the Delhi-Mathura passenger train, he became fearful for his life.

“I had read about Junaid’s killing in a train in Ballabhgarh a few days ago. I was scared for my life after the threat, but couldn’t avoid travelling. So I thought of wearing a burqa,” he told the Times of India.

The investigation he underwent found that his statement was true, and he had no other motives for wearing the burqa. He was subsequently released.

Incidents involving persecution of minorities have increased over the past few years. Just 2 months ago, 2 Muslim men were killed by a mob of villagers in New Delhi as they were suspected of stealing cows, which are sacred in the Hindu religion.

This is just one of the many incidents following a wave of attacks this year by ‘cow protection’ vigilante groups. Men armed with sticks inspect livestock trucks on highways looking for cows.

Fear plagues the Muslims in India as more of such incidents spring up and danger looms in their community.

“When I leave home, I wear shirt-pant, not kurta-pyjama, because that way no one can tell I am Muslim, and I can avoid being called a Pakistani,” a man from Junaid Khan’s village told The Indian Express.
