JIT report lands ruling Sharif family in trouble

After months’ long investigations into the financial standing and sources of income of the ruling Sharif family, the report is finally out and it is clearly not in their favor.

The report was presented in front of a three-member panel of judges by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on Monday and since then there had been a lot of speculation regarding its conclusion till the time the report was made public on Monday night.

After the presentation of the report, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has found his authority challenged due to the findings of the report which claim that “he is in possession of assets beyond known sources of income”.

The JIT panel also disclosed that the prime minister was the chairman of a board in another offshore company called FZE Capital, UAE, however, he did not disclose this while filing statutory returns or making declarations before the authorities concerned in Pakistan – be it filings before tax authorities or Election Commission of Pakistan.

The report has found that the prime minister and his family failed to produce the requisite information confirming ‘known sources of income’ which “is prima facie tantamount to not being able to justify assets and the means of income”.

Experts believe that after such a damning report, it will not be easy for the prime minister to escape disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.

After the report was received by the special bench, it has directed counsels from both sides to appear before the court on Monday, July 17, for another hearing. During this time period the bench also instructed the government to provide security to the JIT members.
