Miss South Africa comes under fire for wearing gloves while feeding HIV infected kids

With big titles come bigger responsibilities, therefore when Miss South Africa was seen wearing gloves while handing out food to children infected with HIV, she was massively criticized by the public.

Demi-Leigh Nel Peters, 22, has come under the ire of people who claim that she did this because she was fearful of getting her hands dirty while feeding the infected children. Some people went on to the extent of terming her a racist because most of the children were dark-complexioned.

However, Peters, who herself is mixed-race, strongly denied all these allegations and said that the only reason she wore gloves was for ‘hygiene purposes’ because she was handling food.
The picture was taken at a charity event in Johannesburg, where Peters handed out hot food to children who were suffering from HIV.

After the picture made rounds on social media, people went all out against the beauty pageant, not sparing her at all.

One user on Twitter wrote, “Someone balance me real quick. Why is Miss South Africa wearing gloves? Where the gloves necessary? Please explain.” Another wrote, “Not convinced you deserve to be Miss South Africa feeding orphans wearing gloves, ayi Shame.”

In response to such comments, Peters released a video message on Twitter, explaining her side of the story.

“I just want to clear something up. All the volunteers on site wore gloves because we were told it was the right thing to do while working with food and we were handing out food to young kids.”

She added, “That was our only intention with wearing the gloves; to be as hygienic as possible. I really feel that my intentions were completely misunderstood. To me, the moral of the story today is that 300 kids got a proper, warm lunch and they got that with or without gloves, so I am a bit sad my intentions were taken completely wrong and I can only apologise if I offended anybody.”
