US soldier caught trying to help IS
Tuesday, July 11th, 2017 12:47:05 by fatimaarshadAn active duty soldier based in Hawaii was caught trying to help the Islamic State (IS) militants after pledging allegiance to them. The solider, identified as Ikaika Kang was a sergeant in the first class in the US Army, and he had been stationed in Hawaii.
According to reports, Kang helped IS purchase a drone for it to use against American forces and at one point he also said that he wanted to use his rifle to “kill a bunch of people,” according to an FBI affidavit. Kang also gave top secret military documents to people he believed were from the IS, but none of them got in the hands of the militants.
Kang made an initial appearance on Monday in federal court in Honolulu. He was arrested on Saturday on terrorism charges. Paul Dalecourt, an FBI special agent in charge of the Hawaii bureau, said that Kang was a lone wolf and he did not have any accomplices in this.
Meanwhile Kang’s court-appointed defense attorney, Birney Bervar, said that his client may be suffering from service-related mental health issues. He further added that the government was aware of his client’s mental health but nothing was done to rectify the situation.
He said Kang was “a decorated veteran of two deployments” to Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to the details provided, the 34-year-old soldier had voluntarily pledged allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr-al-Baghdadi and he thought that America was the biggest ‘terrorist organization’.
Kang thought that he was dealing with IS militants, whereas in reality, he was in contact with undercover agents who ultimately helped in his arrest.
