A major disaster was averted on Friday when an Air Canada airplane nearly crashed into four parked aircrafts on a taxiway in San Francisco. The US aviation authorities are now looking into the incident of how an Air Canada plane nearly landed on a crowded taxiway instead of a runaway at the San Francisco airport.

According to the details provided, the Air Canada Airbus A320 was cleared for landing on Runway 28-Right at San Francisco International Airport shortly before midnight on Friday. However, instead of heading for that direction, the pilot inadvertently lined up for Taxiway C, which runs parallel to the runway.

The air traffic controller jumped in at that point and sent the Air Canada plane around. Thankfully, after that the plane landed without an incident.

At that time, four planes were lined up on Taxiway C awaiting clearance to take off when the Air Canada aircraft, which was carrying 135 passengers and five crew members on board, was diverted by the air traffic controller.

Experts are saying that if this accident had come to pass, it would have been catastrophic. “If it is true, what happened probably came close to the greatest aviation disaster in history,” Ross Aimer, a retired United Airlines captain, told the newspaper.

“If you could imagine an Airbus colliding with four passenger aircraft wide bodies, full of fuel and passengers, then you can imagine how horrific this could have been,” he said.

Meanwhile Air Canada has reported that it is investigating the incident and till now, does not have any information to give out regarding what happened.
