Building collapses in Karachi leaving three people dead
Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 1:23:29 by fatimaarshadAt least three people have been killed when a building collapsed in the middle of the night in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area. The building had three-storeys and it had residential apartments as well as a few shops on its ground floor.
According to the details provided, the building was in a dilapidated state but nothing had been done to correct its defects. The building in Liaquatabad No. 9 collapsed at around 2 am on Tuesday, when most of the people were sleeping in their homes. The accident resulted in the death of three people and injury of nine including four women who were trapped in the rubble.
Rescue workers were able to pull out survivors and bodies from under the rubble and shift them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Jinna Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC). However, it is feared that some people might still be trapped under the rubble. As the time passes, their chances of survival become slim.
According to the details provided by the local residents, the building had been in a bad shape and recently a third storey had been illegally built. Around four families had been residing in the apartments and it had tea and paan shops on the ground floor.
While talking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner Central, Captain (retd.) Fariduddin Mustafa said that all the machinery required for the rescue operation was available at the site. However, the workers were trying to avoid the use of heavy machinery as it could risk the lives of those still trapped. He added that it could take up to 24 hours for the operation to be completed.
The collapsed building was not part of the list of Karachi’s 300 dilapidated buildings, Mustafa said.
