Saudi woman arrested for wearing mini skirt in public
Wednesday, July 19th, 2017 12:55:55 by fatimaarshadSaudi police have detained a woman who was seen wearing a mini skirt and crop top in a video which went viral over the weekend. In that video, the woman can be seen walking through a historic site in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, clearly violating the dress code which obligates women to cover their hair and clothes with Abaya.
A series of videos showing the woman were posted to the Snapchat account of Model Khulood, with her walking through a fort in Ushaiqer, which is located outside the capital Riyadh. In the video, the woman can be seen playing with sand in the dunes, walking through the streets and turning towards the camera for a close-up. The videos have since been uploaded to YouTube and have been shared by users.
After the videos surfaced, the social media erupted in a massive debate with some people siding with the woman and some holding their stance against her. A lot of people defended the woman by pointing out the privileges afforded to Western women by Saudi authorities.
“If it were Trump’s daughter, we would have braced ourselves for the flood of compliments and love poems,” read one tweet.
“Problem solved,” tweeted Shahd bint Fahd alongside a picture of the model with Ivanka Trump’s face superimposed over the original.
Others expressed outrage and derided those speaking out in support of the model.
“These are the demands of the liberal ignorant community: a naked woman, a co-ed movie theatre, and music and dance. That’s progress to them! Not health care and not education,” read one tweet.
According to the Saudi media, the woman is in custody and is being questioned by authorities. She confessed to visiting the site with her male guardian but denied uploading those videos on the internet.
The case has now been referred to the public prosecutor’s office, which will decide whether to prosecute her or let her off-the-hook.
