Panchayat orders ‘revenge rape’ in Multan
Wednesday, July 26th, 2017 4:04:18 by fatimaarshadA village council or panchayat is accorded much respect in the rural areas of Pakistan. Therefore whenever there is a matter to be decided, the people take it to the panchayat which then carries out its own justice.
An incident came to light in Multan in which members of a local panchayat are being sought for arrest for ordering revenge rape of a teenage girl. According to the details provided, the members of the panchayat ordered a man to rape a 17-year-old girl because her brother had raped the sister of another man.
Police officer investigating the case, SHO Malik Rashid, told reporters that a search operation had been initiated to capture the panchayat members who fled after hearing that the police was looking for them. The search began after two cases were registered against the members of the council at a police station in Multan’s Muzaffarabad area.
According to the details of the incident provided, the council consisted of 40 men who had convened in an area called Rajpur, after a case was brought to their attention. The case involved the rape of a 12-year-old girl, who was raped by a man while cutting grass in a field on July 16.
On July 18, the Panchayat ordered the victim’s brother to rape the perpetrator’s 17-year-old sister. The girl was dragged in front of the entire group of men and raped before them and her parents.
The girl’s parents then filed an FIR at the Women Police Center on July 20. A second FIR was then filed by the first victim’s family who had initially kept quiet over the matter.
After the cases were registered, police arrested 10 members of the council, including its head, and now search is underway for the remaining.
