Princess Diana’s taped revelations to air on British TV
Monday, July 31st, 2017 12:47:02 by fatimaarshadThe world is aware that the late Princess Diana was in a loveless relationship with Prince Charles and eventually they separated. However, very few people know what Diana actually went through and this side of hers will be revealed on British television for the first time.
The decision to air the confessional tapes on British television comes ahead of Diana’s 20th death anniversary. Channel 4 will broadcast “Diana: In Her Own Words” on August 6, despite a report in The Mail on Sunday newspaper that her brother Earl Charles Spencer is unhappy with the decision.
The tapes were recorded when Diana opened up about her personal life to her voice coach about her loveless marriage to the heir to the British throne and his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now his wife.
In the tapes, Diana also reveals her struggles with an eating disorder called bulimia and about her romance with a mystery man. Diana’s unconsummated romance was believed to be with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee, who died in a motorbike accident.
“At 24, I fell deeply in love with someone who was part of all this and that was all found out and he was chucked out and then he was killed. And that was the deepest blow in my life,” she says in the footage.
Although this is not the first time that the tapes have been aired, this is going to be the first they will be aired on British national television. In 2004, the tapes were screened in United States and are available online.
Defending its decision, Channel 4 said the footage was an important historical resource.
“Though the recordings were made in private, the subjects covered are a matter of public record and provide a unique insight into the preparations Diana undertook to gain a public voice,” it said in a statement.
“This unique portrait of Diana gives her a voice and places it front and centre at a time when the nation will be reflecting on her life and death.”
These tapes were filmed in 1992-1993 at her Kensington Palace home by voice coach Peter Settelen, at the time when the princess separated from Prince Charles.
