Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 1:04:15 by fatimaarshadThe local police submitted a detailed report on the ‘revenge rape’ case of a 16-year-old girl belonging to Multan, in the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday. The rape was carried out on the orders of the panchayat or the local village council as a way of serving justice.
According to the details provided by the Multan City Police Officer Ahsan Younus, the report was submitted in the apex court as it was ordered by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, who had taken suo moto notice of the incident.
The heinous case took place in July in Muzaffarabad, which is an area in Multan. A man had come forward there claiming that his 12-year-old sister had been raped by his cousin in the fields where he was cutting grass.
As a way to serve justice, the panchayat ordered that the sex-offender’s 16-year-old sister should be raped by the victim’s brother. The orders were carried out and the teenager was raped in front of the entire panchayat and her parents.
The punishment was carried out on July 17 after the girl’s family handed her over.
The case was highlighted when both the families filed criminal charges against the other with the police. In both the cases, the other family’s son was accused of rape. According to the investigation report, the mother of the rape survivor filed a complaint with the police on July 20, and a case was filed on the very same day.
All in all, three cases were filed one against each of the three accused; Ashfaq Rafiq, Hameed and Umar Wada.
Questioning both sides in the cases had revealed the role of the panchayat in the rape, Multan CPO Ahsan Younus had earlier stated.
“All the village council elders who ordered the revenge rape have been arrested,” he had said.
A challan will be entered into the trial courts within seven days.
The police have arrested 29 suspects in the case so far.
