Hail storm shatters windscreen of mid-flight plane: pilot makes emergency landing safely
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017 6:18:24 by fatimaarshadA devastating storm in Turkey on Thursday resulted in the closure of the airport and flights were suspended for the day. However, there was a plane which was mid-flight when it got caught in the storm and the pilot had to make an emergency landing.
A Ukranian pilot was flying his plane over Turkey when hailstones, the size of an egg, started pounding on the airplane. As a result, the windscreen of the plane was shattered and the body of the plane also underwent extensive damage.
Initially, it seemed unlikely that the plane will be able to make a safe landing but thanks to the pilot’s skill and courage, he was able to land the plane safely. As a result, all 121 passengers and six crew members on-board were unharmed and they landed safely.
Following the landing, Akopov said, “I have been flying for 30 years. Well, did you see the plane landing? Was it okay? The passengers are alive. It is normal. This is our professional reliability.
“Our locator did not show this weather disaster, this is why it happened. It was hard, but the main thing is that people are alive.”
It has been reported that the Ataturk airport in Istanbul had been closed due to the storm but the pilot was given special permission to land because of the circumstances.
As soon as the plane touched down, the passengers heaved a collective sigh of relief and the plane burst into applause over the bravery and skill of the pilot. One of the frightened passengers from the plane explained how everyone thought that they had been granted a new life.
Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko recognised the bravery and skill of the pilot, and awarded him with the Order of Courage.
