Christian teenager accused of committing blasphemy in Gujranwala
Monday, August 21st, 2017 11:33:26 by fatimaarshadA Christian teenager was brutally beaten up by a mob in Jhamkay town of Wazirabad tehsil in Gujranwala on Sunday for allegedly burning a copy of the Holy Quran. The police arrived on the scene and were able to save the boy from the angry mob before they thrashed him to death.
The identity of the 16-year-old boy is being kept confidential but according to sources, he has been shifted to the Ali Pur Chattha police station where he was booked under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code. The crime is punishable with life imprisonment and the complaint was lodged by an imam named Qari Rana Arshad Ali.
According to the complaint, the boy took away a copy of the Holy Quran from the shrine of Sundhay Shah in Jhamkay and set it on fire. The imam said that he committed this act in the presence of a witness named Muhammad Nawaz.
The police reported that the boy confessed to his crime but he said that he doesn’t know why he did it. Ali Pur Chattha SHO Malik Irfan said that since the suspect had admitted to his crime, there was no need for recording statements of other witnesses.
“The police saved him from the enraged mob,” the sub-inspector said.
“His family should should be grateful to the police. The mob surrounded the police station but we pacified the protesters with the help of the notables of the area,” he added.
Meanwhile the boy’s father maintains that his son has been framed by his enemies and that he would never commit such an act.
