Blue dogs seen roaming the streets of Mumbai
Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017 9:01:26 by fatimaarshadBrightly colored blue dogs were seen roaming the streets of Mumbai, India, near an industrial zone by several astounded onlookers. However, what one may have thought of as a miracle of nature, was actually the doing of toxic industrial dyes which have been poisoning the waters of a river from where stray dogs drink and bathe.
An animal activist saw these blue dogs and immediately delved into investigating what was going on. She found out that a factory had been dumping dye into Indian river and several dogs and birds had been dyed blue as a result of swimming in the contaminated water.
Arati Chauhan said that a factory was found out to be dumping untreated chemicals directly into the Kasadi river.
“We managed to take one dog for treatment as it was suffering from an eye infection,” Arati Chauhan, head of the Navi Mumbai Animal Protection Cell, told AFP.
“The bizarre incident brought to the forefront the dangers posed by these firms which fail to comply with environmental norms.” Chauhan wrote to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, a state body, to complain, and posted images of the dyed dogs online.
“We have shut down the erring firm after it was found they were flouting norms and endangering animals in the vicinity,” Jayant Hajare, the board’s sub-regional officer told AFP.
Officials also ensured to track the health of the dyed canines.
It is not uncommon for factories in India to improperly dispose-off their toxic waste. However, this is the first time that the after-effects of doing that have emerged in such a way.
