Kulsoom Nawaz has lymphoma, confirms daughter

News of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz contracting cancer made waves on Tuesday and now it has been confirmed by her daughter, Maryam Nawaz, that her mother has lymphoma. This is a cancer of the lymph nodes located on the left side of her neck.

“Her treatment begins immediately,” said Maryam on Twitter on Wednesday. She added that doctors were hopeful that the cancer is curable since it has been diagnosed at an early age. So far the form of treatment which has been prescribed is chemotherapy instead of radiation and surgery. More investigative tests will be carried out in order to devise a treatment plan and determine the frequency and intensity of the chemo.

The first treatment course will largely decide how well Kulsoom Nawaz responds to treatment, therefore it is very crucial. It has also been learnt that the treatment is due to begin as early as next week. The chemotherapy will be conducted at a clinic situated near Hasan Nawaz’s house in Park Lane.

Sources revealed that Kulsoon Nawaz appeared to be in high spirits when she met her cancer counselors, who gave her, her options and course of treatment.

The wife of the former prime minister left for London unexpectedly on August 17, just before her nomination papers were to be reviewed at the Election Commission of Pakistan. She is contesting for the NA-120 seat in the upcoming by-poll elections. The seat was left vacant after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified over the Panamagate case incident.
