Khawaja Asif blames Hussain Haqqani for shaping Trump’s new anti-Pakistan policy
Friday, August 25th, 2017 11:28:08 by fatimaarshadForeign Minister Khawaja Asif on Thursday expressed his views on Twitter accusing the former ambassador to the United States (US), Hussain Haqqani of authoring President Donald Trump’s new South Asia policy. The new policy has unfavorable conditions for Pakistan as now the Trump administration wants to take a hard stance against its ‘ally’.
Asif called on ex-president Asif Zardari to ‘rein in’ Haqqani, who was an ambassador during his rule.
Asif, in a tweet, said: “President Zardari instead of criticising [the] government, [should] rein in Haqqani his ambassador to US, taking credit of authoring US policy President Trump announced.”
Haqqani responded to the tweet soon after, saying Pakistan’s foreign minister should “deal with the policy instead of trying to bully an exiled Pakistani on Twitter.”
PPP disowned Haqqani after he authored an article in the Washington Post, taking credit for the finding out where Osama bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan. Haqqani said that it were his connections which led the US to kill Bin Laden. He had been Pakistan’s ambassador to the US from 2008 till 2011.
The US administration signaled a shift in its police towards Pakistan during a recent address by president Trump. The administration threatened to cut off aid to Pakistan for providing ‘safe haven’ to terrorists.
“We can no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organisations,” Trump had said earlier this week, warning that vital aid could be cut.
“We have been paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars at the same time they are housing the very terrorists that we are fighting,” he said. “That will have to change and that will change immediately.”
