Acid thrown on people at Notting Hill Carnival
Tuesday, August 29th, 2017 9:13:25 by fatimaarshadNotting Hill Carnival is Europe’s biggest street festival and every year, thousands of people gather in the streets of London to celebrate it. This year though, people got scared as an acid attack took place at the carnival as a mild acid was thrown on the revelers at the carnival.
The Metropolitan Police said a “mild acidic liquid” was thrown over a number of people in Ladbroke Grove, west London, during the carnival. “Three people have also reported skin irritation injuries, although these are not thought to be serious,” a spokesman said.
The attack was not targeted towards people of a specific race or ethnicity; rather, it was thrown at random. So far there have been no arrests in the case and the police are working to identify who was responsible.
The Notting Hill Carnival traces its roots back to the Caribbean music festivals in the 1950s after people starting arriving from former British colonies post World War II. Dancers, street bands and glaring music is part of the festival which features the British Caribbean culture.
This year, the festival took place a few months after the terrible fire which engulfed the Grenfell Tower and resulted in the death of many people. The festival came to a standstill for a few minutes in order to remember the victims of the deadly fire.
“It was a sad moment. We took our time. It was very, very painful,” said Odella, a teacher in her 50s, her voice breaking with emotion.
“But we remembered the people that died, and so we´re here together in a community spirit. It was wonderful,” she told AFP.
