PML-N’s Kulsoon Nawaz wins NA-120 by-elections
Monday, September 18th, 2017 11:28:34 by fatimaarshadThe NA-120 by-elections was being considered a test for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) after the chairman of the party, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, was disqualified as the Prime Minister of Pakistan by the Supreme Court.
The party came out victorious as the PML-N candidate for the seat, Begum Kulsoon Nawaz, won the by-elections for her husband’s ‘home seat’ on Sunday. The elections were closely contested with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s (PTI) candidate Dr. Yasmin Rashid, trailing close behind.
According to unofficial and unverified results, Kulsoon Nawaz got 61,254 votes, whereas Dr. Yasmin Rashid got 47,066 votes. When the results starting coming in initially, Dr. Yasmin seemed to be taking the lead but the situation changes soon after.
Maryam Nawaz ran her mother’s campaign for her as Kulsoom Nawaz is currently undergoing treatment for cancer in London. These elections were also being considered a test for Maryam, who apparently passed it with flying colors.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who ran her mother’s campaign, tweeted following the victory: “Shukar Alhamdolillah a million times ! This was PMLN vs ALL !”
Addressing party workers at the party’s Model Town office, Maryam congratulated PML-N workers and supporters.
“All the powers which had surrounded Nawaz Sharif were defeated today,” claimed a jubilant Maryam.
Following the victory, workers of PML-N celebrated by distributing sweet meats, dancing and showcasing fireworks at the party’s constituency and its Model Town headquarters.
Meanwhile Dr. Yasmin accepted her defeat gracefully but vowed to approach the court against the Election Commission of Pakistan for registering 29,000 bogus votes in the constituency.
