The gunman silently walked down the aisle and shot unsuspecting people who were assembled there for the Sunday mass.
The shooter has been identified as Emmanuel Kidega Samson, of Murfreesboro, who came to the United States from Sudan in 1996 and later attended the status of a US resident. As Samson tried to kill more people, he was confronted by an usher at the church who contained him. During the struggle, Samson shot himself, but he survived the wound.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting which took place at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. So far a motive for the mindless shooting has not been determined but authorities are investigating the case to find one.
According to the details of the incident provided, Samson pulled into the church’s parking lot as the Sunday service was ending. As soon as he got out of his car he fatally shot a woman who was walking to her car. After that he entered the rear of the church with two pistols and kept firing, wounding six people in the process. Authorities later recovered another pistol and a rifle from the suspect’s car.
The wounded, including the gunman, were immediately taken to a nearby hospital whereas the dead body of the woman was handed over to her relatives. Samson was taken into custody as soon as his gunshot wound was treated.
