Highest volcano in Bali likely to erupt soon

Many tourists’ plans to visit Bali have been cancelled or rescheduled after it was learnt that one of the highest volcanoes on the island is likely to erupt soon. According to reports, the Indonesian government has already ordered the evacuation of nearby villages and are also advising tourists to rethink their travel plans to the beautiful island known for its picturesque beaches and pristine waters.

Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the crater of Mount Agung, which had killed more than 1,000 people when it erupted half a century ago. Strong volcanic tremors could also be felt in the area surrounding the volcano, prompting the evacuation of more than 75,000 people within 12 km radius.

After these reports made headlines, several countries including Australia, Singapore and the United States have issued travel warnings to their citizens regarding traveling to Bali. Several tourist operators and hotels have also reported that people have been cancelling or rescheduling their reservations made around these dates.

“Business is getting low since Mount Agung’s alert status was raised to the highest level,” said Ketut Purnawata, manager of Dasawana Resort, which is in the same district as the volcano, popular with tourists and hikers.

Bali has become a popular tourist destination and just last year, nearly five million people visited Bali from different parts of the world.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has nearly 130 active volcanoes-more than any country in the world. Since lava makes the surrounding land fertile for farming purposes, many people come and settle around it.
