Third hearing in Mashal murder case takes place in KP
Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 3:03:34 by fatimaarshadAn Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) is conducting the third hearing the brutal murder case of Mashal Khan, who was a student at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan. During the hearing, the decision to grant or reject bail applications of 18 of the accused will also be decided.
It has been reported that the case is being heard by Justice Fazl Subhan in the premises of Central Jail Haripur. A;; the accused are being held in the Haripur jail amidst tight security.
On September 19, the ATC had indicted 57 suspects in the case and had rejected the bail application of 17 accused in the case.
Mashal Khan was a journalism student at the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan and he was brutally lynched to death by a violent mob on April 13, this year. Khan had been accused of blasphemy but these claims were never verified and it was later discovered that he had been framed.
The hearing in this case had started in Mardan but the petitioner, Iqbal Khan and the provincial government had requested the court to move the case from Mardan as there was fear of law and order situation. At that time, Iqbal Khan had also disclosed that families of accused were pressurizing him and he was afraid a fair trial may not take place.
Then on July 27, two members of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) bench ordered to move the case to ATC Abbottabad and also shifted the accused to Central Jail Haripur.
After this case made headlines, the controversial Blasphemy law again came into question and it was highlighted how allegations of blasphemy can be used against an innocent person for personal gains.
