An unidentified man carrying a knife, attacked two women at the main train station in the French city of Marseille on Sunday and killed them. He was soon shot dead by the soldiers on patrol, averting further killings.

According to the details provided, the incident took place around lunch time on Sunday, when the station was bustling with commuters. One of the victims had her through slit by the assailant, while the other was stabbed to death.

The identity of the attacker has not been revealed by the officials but the 30-year-old attacker has a criminal record with the police.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said about a dozen witnesses were being questioned.

“This act could be terrorist in nature but at this time we cannot confirm that,” he added.

According to eye witnesses, the attacker was dressed in all-black and he was carrying a knife in one hand. However, the weapon was only noticed once he stabbed his victims.

The French government set up a special force known as Sentinelle, to guard vulnerable places in terror-hit France. The soldiers belonging to the force shot dead the attacker on the spot. Later, the entire station was evacuated and sealed, so that a thorough search could be carried out. All train traffic was also halted in order to curtail crowds.

This incident comes at a time when France is still in a state of high alert following the terrorist attacks which took place in November, 2015. Most of these attacks are carried out by extremists linked to the Daesh group or Al-Qaeda.

Since 2015, a total of 239 people have been killed in France.
