Court convicts suspects of raping victim for refusing proposal after DNA evidence emerges
Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 12:31:29 by fatimaarshadThe Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday convicted a man of raping a teenager and refused his bail application after it was established through DNA evidence that he was the culprit.
According to the details of the incident provided, the suspect raped his victim repeatedly after she refused his marriage proposal. As a result she got pregnant and the DNA evidence gathered from the baby proved that the suspect was the real culprit.
The victim was 17-years-old when she was raped. She is an orphan and had gone to stay at her maternal uncle’s house in Sector G-12 of the capital city in May 2016. Over there her aunt’s brother proposed her for marriage but she refused his proposal.
Enraged by her refusal, the suspect sexually assaulted her repeatedly. The victim claimed that her aunt facilitated the crime by intoxicating her and locking the door from outside while her brother raped the teenager. The suspect threatened to kill the girl’s brother in case she told anyone about the assault.
The victim said that her uncle was completely unaware of this entire episode. She later returned to her home in another district and found out that she was pregnant. She initially kept quiet because of fear, but in January, she told her family about it.
The girl’s family lodged a complaint against the suspect and his sister at Ramna Police Station. The police arrested the suspects but the girl’s aunt was later released on bail.
The suspect’s bail was denied after the baby was born, his DNA evidence was matched with the baby and it turned out that he was the real culprit.
“The most important evidence is that the victim has conceived as a result of zina [rape] and as per the DNA test carried out, the DNA profile of the baby matches that of the accused’s. Hence, there is sufficient material available on record to connect the petitioner [the suspect] with the alleged offence,” Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of IHC observed in his judgment.
The baby born to the victim has been adopted by a couple who had no child.
