Victims raise their voice against sexual harassment through ‘Me Too’ campaign on social media
Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 9:49:09 by fatimaarshadWomen and men have been sexually harassed or assaulted through ages and throughout the world but not many realize how widespread this problem actually is. In a bid to raise awareness, many people have joined the ‘Me Too’ campaign on social media in which they are simply telling the world that they have been victims of these acts.
The campaign started after American actress Alyssa Milano made claims of sexual harassment against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. She then called on Twitter users on Sunday to post their experiences of being sexually harassed or assaulted with the hashtag #metoo.
Women and even men, from around the world quickly responded as Twitter and Facebook became flooded with the hashtag and uncountable stories of being; verbally abused, groped, molested and raped by bosses, teachers and family.
“Lived a life in a world where it was expected, grew thinking I deserved it,” wrote another. “Couldn’t begin to count the # times or men-far too many.”
Many on Twitter and Facebook simply wrote “Me Too,” including actresses Anna Paquin, Patricia Arquette, Debra Messing and Anika Noni Rose and singer Lady Gaga.
“Me too. I don’t know if means anything coming from a gay man but it’s happened. Multiple times,” tweeted Broadway actor Javier Munoz.
Meanwhile there were many who said that such campaigns don’t really matter as nothing changes the reality unless laws are implemented to curb this evil.
“I’m tired of thinking these things actually make a difference,” wrote one Facebook user. “Laws are what makes a difference.”
