Ayesha Gulalai joins #MeToo campaign claiming Imran Khan asked supporters to throw acid on her face
Wednesday, October 18th, 2017 11:59:53 by fatimaarshadAyesha Gulalai made waves in August for claiming to have been harassed by the party chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan. The allegations were refuted by Khan but Gulalai recently joined the #MeToo online trend being used by women worldwide to speak about being sexually harassed. Using the hashtag, Gulalai claimed on Tuesday that Khan had called upon his supporters to throw acid on her face after she threw light on his lewd behavior.
On Sunday, Gulalai had tweeted that a committee was formed to probe into her allegations of sexual harassment against the PTI chief but he was yet to turn up before it. “Tell him [Imran] to be there. I was ready to provide evidence against him [back then] and still am,” she added.
Gulalai had accused the PTI chief and his ‘gang’ of sending indecent text messages to women workers, saying that women in the party were constantly harassed by their male peers.
“It is my integrity that matters to me the most,” the MNA told reporters. “I cannot compromise when it comes to my honour and dignity.”
Gulalai said that victims of harassment in Pakistan were never taken seriously eventually leading them to commit suicide or take a similar extreme step in order to get themselves noticed.
The #MeToo trend was initiated by American actress Alyssa Milano, who claimed to have been harassed by producer Harvey Weinstein. She asked women from all across the world to use the hastag if they had ever been sexually assaulted or harassed to show the world just how widespread these problems were.
