Seminary in India issues fatwa banning Muslims from posting pictures on social media
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 11:50:13 by fatimaarshadThe Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, which is one of the largest Islamic seminaries in India, has issued an order or fatwa, banning Muslims from posting pictures on social media sites.
This implies that all Muslim men and women should not post pictures of themselves or their family members on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or any other social networking site.
The fatwa is an official order or proclamation which is passed to guide the Muslims about certain matters. Darul Iftaa is the branch of Darul Uloom Deoband which issues fatwas on its behalf. This fatwa declares that all acts of posting pictures on social media are ‘un-Islamic’, and if anyone violates this, they will be committing a sin.
The fatwa was issued after a person submitted a written question to the Fatwa department at Darul Iftaa, asking whether posting pictures of himself or his wife on Facebook and Whatsapp, was un-Islamic or not.
Earlier this month, Darul Iftaa also issued a fatwa calling a ban on women plucking, trimming, shaping their eyebrows and cutting their hair.
Darul Iftaa clarified that there are 10 acts, including eyebrow plucking and hair-cutting which were banned for Muslim women under Islam. “Hair adds to the beauty of Muslim women and they should never get them cut, pointed the fatwa. Issuing the fatwa, Darul Iftaa head Maulana L. Sadiq Qasmi said, “Muslim women should stay away from beauty parlours as Islam does not permit them to have make-up that attracts other male members.”
